Diseases & Pests of the Honey BeeDiseases and pests have proven to big the biggest challenge and have caused the biggest changes in beekeeping since Langstroth invented the modern bee hive over 100 years ago. However, in spite of these pests I've heard many beekeepers who survived though the infestations of both tracheal mites and the varroa mite say that they have larger harvests now than before the mite. So while it has proved a challenge to all beekeepers, those who stuck with it and became more than just bee havers are much better bee keepers for it. Below I've started a collection of information on the various pests and diseases including the research efforts and treatments, both commercially available and those more controversial or unproven in a lab. This is of course a work in progress with periodic updates as is the rest of this website and my own beekeeping knowlege. Varroa Mites - Since the mid 1980's this had been the number one pest of honey bees in North America except in some areas where the hive beetle has become the biggest problem more recently. |
