Beekeeping Class offered at the North Carolina Museum of Natural SciencesSaturday, March 25thWho had the sweet idea of semi-domesticating bees for their honey and wax? The written record says some smart fellow in Spain around 6000 B.C.People have continuously kept bees for healthy and profitable reasons: to foster pollination of agricultural land and countryside, to increase crop yields, to produce wax for candles and other goods, to make royal jelly as a health food and to generate sweet, versatile, delectable honey. A typical hive can produce 40 to 50 pounds of the golden goo a year. If you've ever dreamed of donning a beekeeper's hood and starting your own backyard apiary, Saturday is your chance. With the help of N.C. State experts, the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh will teach you all you need to know to get started. "Backyard Bees: Get Hives, Bee Happy" runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is designed to encourage beginners. Young people 12 and up are welcome, though minors must be accompanied by an adult. Cost: $20.
