Backyard beekeeping workshopsMarch 4th, 18th and April 1st, 2006Michigan State University Extension will again team with the White Birch Apiary of Bruce Crossing to offer three backyard beekeeping workshops.Les McBean, who has been in the beekeeping business for 20 years and owner of White Birch Apiary, will instruct the workshops. McBean will also be taking orders for package bees and nucs. The first workshop, "Beekeeping Basics," will be held March 4 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST at the Ewen-Trout Creek School, 144 Airport Road, Ewen. This workshop is designed for people who would like to get started in beekeeping or for those who have had previous beekeeping experience and want to get back into beekeeping. Topics covered will be races of bees, Italian or Carniolan, and which to choose, various types of queens, package bees versus nucs, using new or used equipment and advantages and disadvantages of both, feeding, medicating, mite control, when to quit supering and overwintering. The registration deadline is March 1. The "General Beekeeping" workshop will be March 18 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Marquette Township Hall, 161 County Road 492, Marquette. McBean will focus on a year in the life of a beekeeper and will cover getting started, the different races of queens and their characteristics, building bear fences, making splits (divides), the latest in beekeeping news, new treatments for mites, emergency feeding -- what to use and how, spring medications, re-queening, types of queens, spring inspection of over wintered hives and making comb honey. The registration deadline is March 15. The "Advanced Beekeeping" workshop will be April 1 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST at E-TC School. McBean will focus on a year in the life of a beekeeper and will cover the different races of queens, raising your own queens, building bear fences, making splits (divides), the latest in beekeeping news, emergency feeding, what to use and how, spring and fall medications, when to re-queen, new treatments for mites, making comb honey, selling your honey and Integrated Pest Management. Registration is due March 29. Pre-registration is required for all workshops. The registration fee of $25 for adults and $15 for youth 12-18 years old, and includes lunch. A minimum requirement of 20 participants per session must be pre-registered for the session to be held.
