For older news stories see the Beekeeping News Archives 3 000 rural bee farmers trained05-03-06: Swaziland - In an effort to expand rural bee farmer production, the Ministry of Agriculture and Co- operatives in conjunction with non- governmental organisations (NGOs) has enrolled rural bee farmers to an introductory bee keeping course. This is contained in a report on catalysing the development of the honey industry in Swaziland by Imbita Women’s Trust. The report states that to-date 3 000 farmers have completed the course and have received starter kits. “The economics of bee keeping is very favourable with only a small start up investment capital needed (E800) for one hive and appropriate equipment and protective clothing,” reads part of the report. It is further highlights that the main honey product sold is comb honey. “Only 12 percent of farmers who have completed the training remain active and many are unaware of the economic benefits to bee keeping,” highlights the report.
